Giant Puffball Mushrooms (Calvatia Gigantea) can be found in the meadows, lawns, and other grassy areas of temperate areas throughout the world in late summer or early fall. These white orb shaped shrooms can grow to be as big as one foot in diameter. They look like softballs or volleyballs that have been lost to the forest. Giant Puffballs can be found on the forest floor and can sometimes be found in circles that have been given the fantastical name of “fairy-rings”. These mushrooms have a slightly nutty flavor and a delectable meaty texture which makes them a great vegan meat substitute. Like most mushrooms, they soak up the flavor of any marinades or sauces really well.
Giant Puffball Mushrooms have been known to treat sore throats, coughs, aphasia, vomiting, and hemoptysis. Historically, Giant Puffballs were used by Native Americans to stop the bleeding and treat minor wounds or lacerations.
